Demand the Debate

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Senator McCain has recently called for his first debate with Senator Obama to be canceled. (To debate, or not to debate, that is the question)

Wisely, Senator Obama has rejected McCain’s suggestion. (Barack Obama says the show must go on)

The President of the US must be able to multitask several important issues and events. And the people need to see and hear from their leaders during critical times. Canceling the debate to deal with political and economic issues, however important they may be, indicates an inability to serve as President.

Please demand that the debate go on; sign the petition at http://www.demandthedebate2008.com/

Eve Ensler on Sarah Palin

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Eve Ensler wrote an article about Sarah Palin called Drill, Drill, Drill for The Huffington Post. It has a brilliant opening:

I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last night that she was a member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore the claws of drowned and starved polar bears around their necks.

and goes on to say:

Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take this as a metaphor. In her world and the world of Fundamentalists nothing changes or gets better or evolves. She does not believe in global warming. The melting of the arctic, the storms that are destroying our cities, the pollution and rise of cancers, are all part of God’s plan. She is fighting to take the polar bears off the endangered species list. The earth, in Palin’s view, is here to be taken and plundered. The wolves and the bears are here to be shot and plundered. The oil is here to be taken and plundered. Iraq is here to be taken and plundered. As she said herself of the Iraqi war, “It was a task from God.”

LHC and the New Universe

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

In honor of the successful LHC First Beam (webcast available at http://webcast.cern.ch/), and looking forward to the First Collision coming in about a month, here is a quote from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams:

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers
exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will
instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more
bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already
happened.

I love A Softer World

A recent post from A Softer World:

a softer world 349

I don’t know whether to call it a comic or art, satire or philosophy. But I always love it.

ACLU Campaign: I Am a Constitution Voter

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

The ACLU is launching a new campaign called I Am a Constitution Voter.

I Am a Constitution Voter

* I believe that no one — including the President — is above the law.
* I oppose all forms of torture, and I support both closing the Guantánamo Bay prison and ending indefinite detention.
* I oppose warrantless spying.
* I believe that government officials, no matter how high-ranking, should be held accountable for breaking the law and violating the Constitution.
* I believe that the Constitution protects every person’s rights equally — no matter what they believe, how they live, where or if they worship, and whom they love.
* I reject the notion that we have to tolerate violations of our most fundamental rights in the name of fighting terrorism.
* I am deeply committed to the Constitution and expect our country’s leaders to share and act on that commitment — every day, without fail.
