Growth of the Internet

June 18th, 2008 · No Comments

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the growth of the Internet. Two particular events, as far as I’m aware, have encouraged this. One of these was an announcement by Cogent that they were lowering prices. The other was the release of a Cisco whitepaper on global IP traffic growth.
Cogent has always been the [...]

Wagging the Dog: MPLS vs Carrier Ethernet

June 17th, 2008 · No Comments

For a while now I’ve been hearing about a “war” between MPLS and Carrier Ethernet proponents. Sometimes it’s framed as an IETF versus IEEE debate. Sometimes it’s framed as the incumbent carriers versus next-generation service providers. And so on. Take for instance a blog post by Nortel’s CTO, John Roese, discussing The Future of the [...]

Cisco updates corporate Internet Postings policy to require disclaimer

March 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Today Cisco announced a small change to their corporate Internet Postings Policy. The change states that Internet postings that discuss topics relevant to Cisco’s business must include a statement of affiliation (i.e. the poster works for Cisco) and a disclaimer that the opinions expressed are not necessarily those of Cisco. Overall this is a reasonable [...]

Follow-up on Cogent/Telia transit uncertainty

March 21st, 2008 · No Comments

A few days ago I posted some doubts I was having about the Cogent-Telia depeering, specifically whether the networks were still able to talk via some transit path as reported by Renesys. When I made the post I knew that I was being lazy, not bothering to look at all of the data. But the [...]

The consumer is not an idiot. She’s your wife. So stop laughing.

Joel on Software has a brilliant article on why web standards are doomed.
To quote one of my favorite parts:
A few years pass; you’re still selling Qxyzrhjjjjukltks like crazy; but now there are lots of Qxyzrhjjjjukltk clones on the market, like the open source FireQx, and lots of headphones, and you all keep inventing new features [...]

Cogent pulled the trigger

March 18th, 2008 · No Comments

I just noticed a post on the GigaOm blog discussing the Cogent-Telia depeering. It sounds like Cogent pulled the trigger due to violations of the peering agreement by Telia. I haven’t seen sources to confirm this, but it makes sense.

Cogent - Telia Depeering

March 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Apparently there is a peering dispute between Cogent (AS174) and Telia (AS1299). This has caused a partition between their networks, such that Cogent and Telia customers can’t talk to each other directly. As expected, the Renesys blog provides good coverage of this situation.
The only aspect of the Renesys analysis that I’m uncertain about is whether [...]

China’s Golden Shield

March 5th, 2008 · No Comments

There is an interesting article on the Great Firewall of China, dubbed the “Golden Shield Project”, at http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200803/chinese-firewall. It’s not very technical but it does go into the various techniques used.
It’s especially interesting to consider that these techniques are often used in “network management” in the US, and that the techniques employed by P2P protocols [...]
