An article by John Markoff describes a project by Sun to create a silicon-based optical interconnect between processor cores (and maybe memory etc). This project should prove interesting and generate advances in computer engineering even if it fails to reach its goal. I look forward to hearing more details as this evolves.
Further, I’m glad to see Fed money going into technology research, even if it is ultimately motivated by the military-industrial complex.
