Cisco updates corporate Internet Postings policy to require disclaimer

March 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Today Cisco announced a small change to their corporate Internet Postings Policy. The change states that Internet postings that discuss topics relevant to Cisco’s business must include a statement of affiliation (i.e. the poster works for Cisco) and a disclaimer that the opinions expressed are not necessarily those of Cisco. Overall this is a reasonable [...]

Sun awarded DARPA contract to develop optical processor interconnect

March 24th, 2008 · No Comments

An article by John Markoff describes a project by Sun to create a silicon-based optical interconnect between processor cores (and maybe memory etc). This project should prove interesting and generate advances in computer engineering even if it fails to reach its goal. I look forward to hearing more details as this evolves.
Further, I’m glad to [...]

Follow-up on Cogent/Telia transit uncertainty

March 21st, 2008 · No Comments

A few days ago I posted some doubts I was having about the Cogent-Telia depeering, specifically whether the networks were still able to talk via some transit path as reported by Renesys. When I made the post I knew that I was being lazy, not bothering to look at all of the data. But the [...]

ice age. literally.

March 20th, 2008 · No Comments

From the BBC, by way of Greenpeace, I stumbled across this scary graphic:

Just looking at the graph, that’s about a 50% growth in the proportion of young ice versus older ice. The graphic doesn’t portray absolute figures, just percentages. But since we know the ice cover is shrinking overall this means that older ice is [...]

The consumer is not an idiot. She’s your wife. So stop laughing.

Joel on Software has a brilliant article on why web standards are doomed.
To quote one of my favorite parts:
A few years pass; you’re still selling Qxyzrhjjjjukltks like crazy; but now there are lots of Qxyzrhjjjjukltk clones on the market, like the open source FireQx, and lots of headphones, and you all keep inventing new features [...]

Ecological IT motivations?

March 18th, 2008 · No Comments

A funny post on the Greenpeace blog, about their presentation at the recent CeBIT show. They reference an article in The Register talking about the show. To summarize the article in one quote, “a refreshingly frank IBM spokesman said energy consumption had been driven up the agenda because power costs had been driven up the [...]

Cogent pulled the trigger

March 18th, 2008 · No Comments

I just noticed a post on the GigaOm blog discussing the Cogent-Telia depeering. It sounds like Cogent pulled the trigger due to violations of the peering agreement by Telia. I haven’t seen sources to confirm this, but it makes sense.

Cogent - Telia Depeering

March 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Apparently there is a peering dispute between Cogent (AS174) and Telia (AS1299). This has caused a partition between their networks, such that Cogent and Telia customers can’t talk to each other directly. As expected, the Renesys blog provides good coverage of this situation.
The only aspect of the Renesys analysis that I’m uncertain about is whether [...]

Encourage your Congressman to Outlaw Waterboarding

March 10th, 2008 · No Comments

Recently, President Bush vetoed the Intelligence Authorization bill because it made it illegal for the CIA to use waterboarding as an interrogation technique. Tomorrow the House of Representatives is expected to vote in an attempt to overturn that veto.
Please contact your Congressional Representative tonight and ask for their support overturning Bush’s veto. Below is the [...]

Seraphim Falls

March 7th, 2008 · No Comments

We watched the movie Seraphim Falls the other night. I recommend it. The ending was a bit surreal… All I will say is that the main characters make a devil’s deal, and through it find redemption. But that’s not why you should watch Seraphim Falls.
The reason to watch Seraphim Falls is the acting of Pierce [...]
